Peacock (discontinued): White MOP & Paua Abalone 8" X 10" x ½" unframed panel (Pinctada maxima & Haliotis iris; Aust./N.Z.). Made in 1992 by a South Korean shell industry friend (now deceased), this is an example of paper-thin shell veneer pieces being overlaid on a block of wood, and black lacquer then built up flush with the shell. The body and legs are MOP, the tail feathers of Paua, and all detailing was hand sawn through a temporarily glued stack of shell veneers (to get multiples).
